Group three: Ways of Thinking

What does it mean to be well-educated?

I like how Kohn explained the correlation between "high scores on a range of standardized tests and a shallow approach to learning." Standardized testing, in my opinion, is a bad way of judging how well someone is educated. I know many students who are very smart and know the material that was taught, but are just anxious when it comes to taking tests and thus their anxiety results in a bad test score. On the other hand, some students are very good at just memorizing words and concepts and not genuinely grasping and understanding what is being taught to them. Test scores can be misleading. I believe you can be poorly educated even if you attended a 5 star school with magnificent teachers. It's what you take away from the learning experience that makes you educated.

Howard Gardner

I didn't really understand where the speaker was coming from when he was talking about the IQ tests. He mentions that there are too many different levels of intelligence for an IQ test to be accurate, but thats why the test results in different numbers, that's the whole point. I don't think I get what he meant by "multiple intelligences."
